Barack Obama returns to the campaign trail this weekend. His first stops are Ohio and Michigan. Both states hold critical Senate races. These contests will decide which party controls the chamber next year.

In Cleveland, Obama will rally support for Sherrod Brown. Brown is the Democratic former senator trying to win his old seat back. His opponent is Republican Senator Jon Husted. Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for governor, will also join them. She faces Republican Vivek Ramaswamy.

Ohio leans Republican now. Yet this race remains fiercely competitive. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have both campaigned there recently. They aim to boost Husted and Ramaswamy.

Later, Obama heads to Detroit. There he will campaign for Abdul El-Sayed. El-Sayed is the Democratic nominee for Senate. He is a former public health official. He won a very close primary. Now he works to unite Democrats. He runs against former Republican Congressman Mike Rogers.

Detroit’s population is about seventy five percent Black. Obama’s visit could strengthen El-Sayed’s support with these voters. In the primary, El-Sayed lost Wayne County which includes Detroit to Haley Stevens by about six points. Former Vice President Kamala Harris already stumped for El-Sayed in September.

Their relationship is complex. El-Sayed once criticized Obama. After the 2012 election he wrote that Obama failed to deliver on progressive promises. He said Obama was not the right choice just not the wrong one.

El-Sayed recently clarified his views. He told reporters he appreciates the former president. He called Obama foundational to his own political journey. He also said it is normal to admire someone and still disagree with some of their actions. He acknowledged Obama created opportunities for people like him. The two spoke by phone after El-Sayed won his primary in August.

Michigan has other key races open. Voters will elect a new governor attorney general and secretary of state. Jocelyn Benson the Democratic candidate for governor is set to appear at the Detroit rally. She runs against Republican Congressman John James.

Obama’s travel schedule is getting busier. Next week he plans to headline a rally in Georgia. He will appear with Senator Jon Ossoff and gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms. President Trump is also scheduled to campaign in Georgia this Saturday. The political heavyweights are choosing their battlegrounds carefully. Their involvement shows how much is at stake this November.
