Balancing Technology in Classrooms: A Call for Human Connection

These are the human skills that allow someone to interrogate an AI’s output, to spot bias in a summary, or to ask a better question than the one initially prompted. As Archuleta points out, trusting relationships between students and teachers are the bedrock of this development. An algorithm cannot model curiosity, provide empathetic encouragement, or navigate the complex social-emotional landscape of a classroom. The proposed policies are notably specific. For our youngest learners in pre-K through second grade, the suggestion is a stark limitation of screen time reserving it primarily for individualized educational plans. For the entirety of grade school, the call is for zero tolerance for student-facing AI. This isn’t about fear-mongering; it’s about protecting developmental space. Early childhood is a period of rapid neurological growth where tactile play, social interaction, and unstructured creation build the cognitive architecture for all future learning. The World Health Organization has long recommended limited screen time for young children to promote healthy physical and mental development. Substituting that with passive consumption or even interactive apps risks undermining the very skills—problem-solving, collaboration, creativity—we claim we want technology to foster.

What does this look like in practice? It means:

  • A focus on active engagement rather than passive screen time.

This philosophy aligns with a broader, quieter movement in the tech industry itself. Developers and designers are increasingly advocating for “humane technology” that aligns with our psychological needs rather than exploiting our attention. Tristan Harris, co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, often argues that our metrics for success in tech are broken. In education, the parallel is clear. Success cannot be measured by hours logged on a platform or keystrokes per minute. It must be measured by the lightbulb moments, the solved disagreements, the confidence to present an idea. Policy, therefore, must be crafted not in isolation but in tight collaboration with the educators in the trenches, as Archuleta urges.

The ultimate goal is not to create Luddites but to cultivate discerning, resilient humans. By intentionally limiting certain technologies at key developmental stages, we are not withholding the future. We are building the cognitive and social scaffolding to navigate it. We are ensuring that when students do engage with powerful AI tools, they do so from a position of strength—with the literacy to command it, the numeracy to verify it, and the human connection to contextualize it. The most innovative classroom in 2025 might just be the one that knows precisely when to power down.
