Solana vs Sui: Understanding the 17x Valuation Gap

Look at their market caps. Solana sits at $59.8 billion. Sui struggles at $3.9 billion. This is not a subtle difference. This gap tells you where serious money and institutional confidence have placed their bets.

The surface-level math shows Solana worth over 15 times more. Yet this figure is misleading. You must account for Sui’s future token unlocks. Only 41% of its 10 billion maximum supply is circulating today. Compare that to Solana, where over 92% of its tokens are already in the hands of the market. When you value both networks as if all their tokens were free to trade, the gap shrinks. Solana’s fully diluted valuation is $64.4 billion against Sui’s $9.5 billion. That is a factor of about 7, not 17. The looming overhang of billions of yet-to-be-released SUI tokens creates a constant pressure on its price that Solana simply does not face.

This pressure shows in the price action. Despite a brief period of outperformance, SUI is down 32% this year. It trades 82% below its all-time high. Solana, while also down from its peak, has held its ground better. Smaller layer 1 blockchains like Sui often bear the brunt of market downturns. Capital flees to perceived safety. Right now, that safety is Solana.

Institutional activity makes this preference concrete. Spot Solana ETFs in the United States hold $1.61 billion in net assets. These are real dollars from traditional finance buying and holding SOL on behalf of investors. More telling was J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s move last October. They chose Solana to launch their tokenized money market funds. This is not speculative trading. This is a global bank using Solana’s blockchain for regulated financial products. It is a stamp of approval that carries immense weight.

Sui is not without its own institutional touches. It has a staking ETF. Firms like Franklin Templeton and VanEck have shown interest. But interest has not translated into price stability or massive capital inflows. The launch of its ETF did not prevent a steep yearly decline. The signal from big finance is clear. For major real-world deployment, they are choosing Solana.

Daily activity reveals another layer. Trading volume for SOL consistently dwarfs that of SUI, often by a factor of seven or more. This liquidity is a magnet for larger players. They can enter and exit positions without drastically moving the market. Solana’s deeper liquidity and larger user base create a powerful network effect. More developers build there because the users are there. More users go there because the applications are there. Sui is trying to break this cycle, but it is an uphill battle.

So can Sui close the gap? The path is narrow. It would require Sui’s actual usage and fee generation to dramatically outpace the selling pressure from its scheduled token unlocks. It would need its ETF to attract steady significant inflows while Solana’s see outflows. Most critically, it would need a landmark institutional adoption, a J.P. Morgan-scale announcement of its own. Without these, the 7x fully diluted valuation gap looks justified. The market is paying a massive premium for Solana’s maturity, its liquidity, and its proven ability to attract the giants of traditional finance. For Sui to claim a similar premium, it must first prove it can walk the same path.
